Editorial policy
How we write about solar in the UK: what we aim to do, what we avoid, and how we keep the site trustworthy.
What this site is for
- Decision support: We help UK households understand the trade-offs behind solar, batteries, and payback.
- Local context: We use postcode-level modelling to make “roughly correct for your area” easier than relying on national averages.
- No pressure: We focus on clarity first. Quotes and installers are optional, not the starting point.
How we choose what to publish
- Evergreen first: We prioritise topics that stay true over time (physics, sizing logic, seasonal mismatch, grid trade-offs).
- UK-specific where it matters: We explain UK constraints such as export limits and basic compliance, without turning into a news site.
- Useful long-tail: If a homeowner is asking a precise question, we aim to answer it properly rather than producing thin “SEO filler”.
Sources and claims
- We cite authoritative sources for anything numeric, UK-specific, or policy-related (for example Ofgem, PVGIS, ONS, GOV.UK, MCS and other recognised bodies).
- We separate facts from assumptions. When results depend on assumptions (self-consumption, export value, battery behaviour), we say so.
- We avoid false precision. Solar outcomes vary by roof layout, shading, usage patterns, and electrical constraints. We present indicative estimates, not guarantees.
For how our postcode estimates are produced and what we do not model, see Data Sources / Methodology.
Independence and monetisation
SolarByPostcode may earn a referral fee if you choose to engage with partners via the site. This comes at no extra cost to you and is paid by the provider, not added to your quote.
- We do not sell rankings. We do not accept payment to label a product, installer, or approach as “best”.
- Our modelling is not for sale. Partners do not get to change assumptions, outputs, or conclusions.
- We aim to be conservative. If the honest answer is “solar may not be worth it in your situation”, we say that.
See our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy for details.
Corrections and feedback
- If something is wrong, we want to know. Please contact us with a link and a short description.
- We fix errors. When we change something that affects outputs, we update the relevant page(s) and refresh the site where needed.
- We prefer clarity over ego. If we are uncertain, we say so.
