About SolarByPostcode
Our mission
We help UK households decide whether solar panels (with or without battery storage) make financial and environmental sense for their home, without sales pressure, hidden agendas, or confusing jargon.
Our job is to help you answer the question: "Should I even do this?"
How to use this site
If you are new to solar, start with our guides to understand the trade-offs (output, sizing, batteries, and payback).
When you are ready to run real numbers, use Find my postcode to see location-based estimates and assumptions.
The problem we're solving
Solar can feel complex. It’s easy to get quotes before you fully understand the basics, and that can make decisions harder than they need to be.
We believe you deserve clear, honest numbers before sharing your contact details.
Who we are
SolarByPostcode is an independent, reader-supported project run by energy-data enthusiasts based in Copenhagen. We are not tied to any manufacturer, installer, or energy company.
We built this site because clear, trustworthy information is hard to find. Solar can be brilliant, but it depends on your location, your roof, your energy use, and your local electricity rates. Generic advice can miss the mark.
How the site is built
We use official, public data sources:
- ONS Postcode Directory (ONSPD) — UK postcodes, verified locations, regional boundaries
- PVGIS (EU Joint Research Centre) — solar irradiance and expected energy yield by location
- Ofgem Price Cap — electricity unit rates and standing charges by region
- GOV.UK / MCS statistics — installation context and cost ranges from certified-installation sources where available
- Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Open Data — local housing context (aggregated; never address-level)
Every figure on the site is a modelled estimate derived from these sources using transparent formulas. See Data sources and methodology for the assumptions and caveats.
Editorial standards
We aim to be conservative and clear. If something depends heavily on assumptions (for example self-consumption, export value, or battery sizing), we explain the trade-off rather than pretending there is a single answer.
For how our estimates are produced and what we do not model, see Data sources and methodology.
How we earn money
SolarByPostcode may earn a referral fee if you choose to request quotes or engage with partners via the site. This comes at no extra cost to you and is paid by the provider, not added to your quote.
Important: Our data and calculations are independent. We aim for transparent numbers and show both benefits and costs. See our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
What makes us different
1) Honest about limitations
We'll say when solar probably isn't worth it. Batteries add convenience but often extend payback, and we explain the trade-offs.
2) Local, real data
Your postcode uses your region's electricity prices, local sunshine, and typical housing mix, not national averages.
3) No forms, no pressure
Get the essentials without sharing your email or phone number. Only when you're ready do we connect you to installers or partners.
4) Clear assumptions
Each calculator shows its working: system costs, consumption, export assumptions, losses, and lifespan. Learn more in Data sources and methodology.
Accuracy and feedback
We aim for complete accuracy, but solar economics vary by property, roof condition, energy usage, and personal circumstances. Our numbers are informed estimates, not guarantees.
